In Addition to Weeklong Activities, HSBC to Sponsor Tennis Channel Wimbledon Coverage, Create Original Content
NEW YORK, N.Y., June 17, 2009 - HSBC, "The world's local bank" and official Wimbledon sponsor, is bringing the authentic tournament experience to New York City for the second year with "HSBC presents Wimbledon 2009 at Rockefeller Center." This year, the festivities extend to a full week, as Rockefeller Center plays host to complimentary activities from June 22-26. Throughout the week, HSBC partnerships with Prince, Polo Ralph Lauren and California Giant Berry Farms will give fans a taste of all the tournament has to offer. HSBC brings the Wimbledon tradition into people's homes, too, with its sponsorship of Tennis Channel tournament coverage and original programming.
"Wimbledon is a global event, and as the world's local bank and tournament sponsor, we are uniquely qualified to bring this program to life," said Kevin Martin, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Marketing, HSBC Bank USA, N.A. "With the support of our great partners, HSBC is providing New Yorkers with a true taste of Wimbledon."
The program will kick-off Monday, June 22, when former world No. 1 ranked players Jim Courier and Jennifer Capriati play on a specially developed grass singles court in the heart of midtown Manhattan. The noon event will take place at the HSBC outdoor venue at Rockefeller Center, with emcee Luke Jensen calling the plays and select fans getting to volley with the champions. Polo Ralph Lauren, official outfitter of Wimbledon court staff, will dress the ball boys and girls in tournament uniforms. Complimentary on-site activities during the week will include live daily Wimbledon broadcasts, public grass court play, Prince tennis clinics, carts serving traditional English strawberries and cream, and kiosks to play the new EA Sports™ Grand Slam® Tennis video game.
"We are thrilled to partner with HSBC to bring the excitement of Wimbledon to Rockefeller Center," said Thomas Madden, Managing Director, Tishman Speyer. "We look forward to offering tennis fans the opportunity to play on Manhattan's only grass court, as well as an exclusive venue for visitors and New Yorkers alike to watch the matches."
HSBC will serve as the two-week presenting sponsor of Tennis Channel's nightly show Wimbledon Primetime, hosted by veteran broadcaster Bill Macatee which, in addition to interviews with players, coaches, agents, and other tennis luminaries, will air highlights from HSBC activities in New York. "HSBC Performance of the Day" branded features will air during the second week of Wimbledon. Rounding out the partnership, Tennis Channel will air 30-second HSBC commercials during tournament coverage, and bank logos will appear on-set, within show graphics and on tagged tune-ins.
California Giant Berry Farms, a supplier of Wimbledon's traditional treat, is donating 75,000 strawberries for the public to enjoy at strawberries and cream carts in the HSBC outdoor viewing area. Representatives from California Giant will also provide healthy eating advice to children from the City Parks Foundation at a June 23 tennis clinic, where tennis legend Courier will teach the young players. HSBC is a longtime supporter of City Parks Foundation youth education and environmental initiatives, including the June 23 clinic.
"The opportunity to participate in this exciting week of activities here in New York City really helps to reinforce our messaging at California Giant about the importance of combining diet and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle," said Bill Moncovich, President/CEO for California Giant Berry Farms. "As a grower-shipper of fresh berries, we are proud to contribute to the health of American consumers by providing abundant, healthy and delicious products."
Prince Sports, Inc., a partner of the All England Tennis Club and official global licensee of the Wimbledon® brand of tennis racquets and sports bags, will provide tennis balls and racquets from its ground-breaking new EXO³ line for the public to use on the court. Certified Prince tennis pros will host clinics for the public.
