5 North American Chinese Educational Foundation (NACEF), located in the heart of Silicon Valley, is a nonprofit public organization incorporated under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for charitable purpose. NACEF is exclusively organized for educational and cultural exchange purposes between United States and China. The foundation was initially established in 1998 by a group of enthusiastic Chinese students at Stanford University with the belief that education is a critical requisite and an effective catalyst for social and economic development between those two great countries. Dr. Mike Mao was one of the key founders, then a post doctoral student at Stanford. Today, NACEF continues to operate under the leadership of Dr. Mike Mao.
The first project NACEF took on was China Hope Project. The project's mission was to provide school dropouts in China's poverty-stricken areas with new education opportunities. In January of 1998, NACEF, alone with Chinese Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) and Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Stanford (ACSSS), launched China Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America. The event gained support and participation from 33 Chinese Students and Scholar Associations from major universities, including Stanford, University of California at Berkeley, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University and Columbia University and many Chinese community organizations. The event also received coverage by many major newspapers. Today, NACEF continues to be the key driving force for China Hope Project in North America.
