What is Android Pay?

Android Pay is a contactless mobile payment service supported by Google and major card networks (e.g., MasterCard and Visa). With Android Pay you can simply unlock your phone, place it near a contactless terminal, and you're good to go. You don't even need to open an app. Tap and pay is that fast, that easy.

What devices can I use with Android Pay?

You'll need an Android phone running Kit Kat (4.4) or higher version of the Android operating system. To check what version of Android your phone is running, open your device's Settings app, scroll to the bottom and tap About phone or About tablet. Under "Android version," the number shown is your device's Android version number.

Your phone also needs to support NFC (Near Field Communication) and HCE (Host Card Emulation). To check if your phone supports NFC, open your device's Settings app, touch "Share and Connect" or "More", and make sure "NFC" is listed and turned on. These steps may vary by device.

When you turn on NFC, HCE is turned on automatically. HCE is available on most devices.

Where can I use Android Pay?

Android Pay is accepted at over one million stores across the US, and is now available in your favorite Android apps. Look for the Android Pay or Contactless symbol when you check out.

How do I use my Android device to make an Android Pay transaction?
  1. Unlock the screen (if locked) and hold the phone to the payment terminal
  2. No need to open the Android Pay app first – just tap!
  3. You will see a check mark on your device screen when the transaction is completed.
Which HSBC cards are compatible with Android Pay?

The following consumer cards are available to add in your Android Pay wallet:

Can I use multiple HSBC cards with Android Pay?

Yes, you can use multiple HSBC cards with Android Pay. There is no limit on the number of cards that can be stored in the Android Pay app. Devices do not share cards, so if you want the same card on two different devices, you will need to load the card on each device separately. You can add the same card on up to 10 eligible Android devices. The cards you have added can be accessed via the Android Pay app on your device(s). Any additional authorized cardholders on your account will need to add their card to Android Pay on their own device if they wish to use the service.

How do I get a refund for something I purchased with Android Pay?

If you need to make a return for a purchase made with Android Pay you can receive refunds to your account. The key difference is that you may be asked to provide to the cashier the last four digits of your Virtual Account Number instead of the last few digits of your Card number. The last four digits of your Virtual Account Number for your Card can be found by selecting your Card in the Android Pay app and viewing the card details.

Do I still get rewards when I use Android Pay?

Yes, you receive all of the same rewards, security and benefits of your HSBC MasterCard Card when you use it with Android Pay.

Why am I being asked to verify my HSBC Card during the enrollment process?

During activation, you may be required to complete additional verification steps while your card details are confirmed. If you need to provide additional verification, you will be presented options on how to complete.

You can select text message (SMS), email, or you can call HSBC at the number provided to complete your enrollment. Depending on the information we have on record for your account, you may not be presented with all options.

Select "Next" to continue. If you select Email or SMS, you will be sent a one-time temporary verification code to the mobile number or email address displayed. Once you receive your code by the method you selected (this may take a few minutes), enter it in the appropriate field within the Android Pay app as soon as possible to complete your enrollment.

If your information is verified, you should receive an Android Pay app notification that your card is ready for Android Pay.

How will the device know which card I want to use?

The default card is the one that will be automatically charged for each transaction. The first card you add to Android Pay becomes your default payment card, unless you change it. Make sure to set your HSBC card as your default card.

How do I set my default card for payments?

The first card you add to Android Pay becomes your default payment card, unless you change it. To change the default card, drag the card in the Android Pay app to the top "default" spot, tap "set as default card" in the card detail screen, or select the card in the Android Pay section of the Google Settings app.

How do I remove a card from my device?

You can remove a card from your device on the phone and on the web.

On your phone:

  1. Open the Android Pay app.
  2. If you have multiple Google Accounts in Android Pay: At the top left, touch your name, then choose the account you want to remove a card from.
  3. Double tap the card you want to remove.
  4. Scroll down, then touch Remove card.

On the web:

  1. Sign in to payments.google.com.
  2. On the left, click Payment methods.
  3. To the right of the card, click Remove.
Does HSBC charge anything to use Android Pay?

No. HSBC does not charge a fee for customers to use Android Pay.

When making a purchase in a store with Android Pay, will I get the option to receive cash back?

Yes, if the merchant allows for cash back. If you are using an HSBC Debit Card, the merchant payment terminal will ask you if the card is "Debit" or "Credit". If you select the Debit option, you will be prompted to enter your card PIN. The debit option will allow cash back if the merchant offers it.

Is Android Pay safe and secure for making payments? How does HSBC help protect me against fraud?

The safety and security of your account information is of the highest importance. When you make payments with Android Pay and your HSBC card:

  • Your full card number is not shown to the merchant or to Google.
  • All transactions are monitored by HSBC's risk and fraud detection systems.
  • Purchases made using Android Pay are protected by Zero Liability, so you won't be held responsible for promptly reported unauthorized transactions.

What if my HSBC card is lost or stolen?

Please call HSBC right away at 800.462.1874 and mention that you are an Android Pay customer. We will close your card so that no more purchases can be made. You should also remove the lost or stolen card from the Android Pay app using the "Remove Card" option. When you receive your new card, you will need to add the new card to Android Pay before making any Android Pay purchases.

What if my Android device is lost or stolen?

In addition to notifying your mobile carrier, please call 800.462.1874 promptly and mention that you are an Android Pay customer so that we can disable your card for use with Android Pay. If you locate your device, you will need to add your card back to Android Pay before making any Android Pay purchases.

If your phone is lost or stolen, you can find, lock, or erase it using Android Device Manager. Please refer to the Google Support website for more information about Android Device Manager.

Since Android Pay doesn't store your card details on your phone, anyone who finds or steals your phone won't be able to access that information, even if it's unlocked.

If I receive a replacement card, do I need to update my card information within Android Pay?

Yes. If you receive a new card with a new expiration date and/or security code (3 digit code on back of card), you will need to update your card information in your Android Pay app. Please remove your old card and add your new card in your Android Pay app.

Is my card account number or other information being shared with Android?

To deliver you the best Android Pay experience, we will display certain account information on your device, such as data for your recent purchases, for each Card you have selected to use with Android Pay, but not your full account information. At any time, you can turn off the display of transaction data manually within Android Pay by adjusting the "Notifications" for each Card. We will never share your plastic Card number with Google. What is Apple Pay?

How do I use my Apple device to make an Apple Pay transaction?

To pay, just hold your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID. Or you can double-click the Home button when your iPhone is locked to access your Wallet and quickly make your purchases. To pay with Apple Watch, just double-click the side button and hold the display of Apple Watch up to the contactless reader. A subtle vibration and beep on the iPhone will let them know the payment was successful, whereas a gentle tap and beep on the Apple Watch will confirm that the payment information was sent. To make purchases within participating apps, choose 'Apple Pay' as the payment method and authenticate using the Touch ID.

Will Apple Pay still work on my Apple Watch if I'm not wearing it?

No. When the Apple Watch is removed, Apple Pay is disabled, and the customer must enter their passcode to enable it once it is returned to the wrist.

Which HSBC cards are compatible with Apple Pay?

The following consumer cards are available to add in your Apple Pay wallet:

Can I use multiple HSBC cards with Apple Pay?

Yes. For each Apple Pay enabled device (iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch) you can load up to eight cards. Devices do not share cards, so if you want the same card on two different devices, you will need to load the card on each device separately. You can add the same card on up to 10 eligible Apple devices. The cards you have added can be accessed via your Wallet on your device(s). Any additional authorized cardholders on your account will need to add their card to Apple Pay on their own device if they wish to use the service.

How do I get a refund for something I purchased with Apple Pay?

If you need to make a return for a purchase made with Apple Pay you can receive refunds to your account. How do I add my card on my iPhone or iPad?

Before you add your card to Apple Pay, it is a good idea to set up 'Find my iPhone (FMIP)' on your devices to ensure if you lose your device/cards it is easier to track and prevent unauthorized access to your cards.

This can be done at www.apple.com/support/iphone/find or by downloading the "Find My iPhone" app.

You have 3 methods to add a credit or debit card to your Device:

  • During the Set up Assistant, after you turn on your iPhone / iPad for the first time
  • In the Wallet App
  • In Settings > Wallet App & Apple Pay

Simply follow these steps below to guide you in adding a card in Apple Pay:

  • Click 'Add Credit or Debit Card' to continue then click 'Next' in the top right of the screen.
  • If you have a Credit or Debit card on file with iTunes, you can tap "Next" to add it to your Apple device by entering the 3 digit card security code (CVV).
  • If you don't have a Credit or Debit Card on file with iTunes, or want to add a different card, you can use your iPhone device's iSight camera to capture the information from the card. You can also manually enter the card details then click "Next".
  • If not all of the information is added from the front of the card, enter it manually. This may include your card expiration date and 3 digit card security code (CVV).
  • If prompted, enter your Apple ID password and click "OK."
  • You will then need to read and accept the "Terms for Adding Your HSBC Card to an E-Wallet" by clicking on 'Agree' plus also tapping the 'Agree' alert that appears.
  • The activation can take several minutes and may require additional verification steps to complete while your card details are confirmed.
  • Wallet will show 'Your Card is being activated' until the verification has been completed.
  • Click 'Done' to continue.

How do I add my card on my Apple Watch?

To add the card to your Apple Watch you will need to have added the debit/credit card initially on your iPhone in the Wallet app and ensure your Apple Watch is synced to it. Even if you've already added the cards to your iPhone you will then also need to add them to the Apple Watch separately.

To add cards to your Apple Watch:

  • Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, and tap "Wallet & Apple Pay" to continue. You will need to have your Apple Watch unlocked also.
  • Select "Add Credit or Debit Card" to continue. If prompted, enter your Apple ID Password and select "OK"
  • If you have a Credit or Debit card on file with iTunes, you can tap "Next" to add it to the Apple Watch by entering the 3 digit card security code (CVV).
  • If you don't have a Credit or Debit Card on file with iTunes, or want to add a different card, you can use your iPhone device's iSight camera to capture the information from the card. You can also manually enter the card details then click "Next".
  • If not all of the information is added from the front of the card, enter it manually. This may include your card expiration date and 3 digit card security code (CVV).
  • You will then need to read and accept the "Terms for Adding Your HSBC Card to an E-Wallet" by clicking on 'Agree' plus also tapping the 'Agree' alert that appears.
  • If your enrollment was successful, your card will be displayed and also give you the option to change your default card. The default card will be the first card you added. If you wish to change your default card, simply tap the default card and select the desired card.
  • After you have set up Apple Pay on Apple Watch, you won't need your iPhone with you to make purchases in stores, but not in apps.

No. You will need to add them to each device individually. The cards you have added can be accessed via your Wallet on your device(s).

How will the device know which card I want to use?

You will have to set one of your cards as a default card, which is the one that will automatically charge to when you hold your device to the Contactless Card Reader. The first card you add to Wallet is your default card, unless you change it to a different card. If you wish to use another card during a transaction, open your Apple Wallet and select the appropriate card.

How do I set my default card for payments?

The first card you add to Wallet is your default card. To change your default card, use the steps below.

On your iPhone:

  1. Open Wallet.
  2. Touch and hold your finger on the card that you want to make the default.
  3. Drag the card to the front of the cards in the Apple Pay section.

On your iPad:

  1. Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.
  2. Tap Default Card.
  3. Choose a new card.
How do I remove a card from my device?

iPhone / iPad:

  • To remove the cards from your iPhone/iPad, navigate to the card in the Wallet, and select the card you wish to remove. Select the (i) icon located in the bottom right hand corner of Wallet to reveal the 'back of the pass.' Scroll to the bottom of the page to reveal a 'Remove Card' option in red text. Select this and a pop up warning message will appear with the message 'Remove this card will also remove your transaction history' along with the 'Remove' option beneath it. Selecting the option will now remove the card from Wallet.
  • You can also remove a card by going into Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, and selecting the card you would like to remove, which reveals the 'back of the pass.' Scroll to the bottom of the page to reveal a 'Remove Card' option in red text. Select this, and a pop up warning message will appear with the message 'Remove this card will also remove your transaction history' along with the 'Remove' option beneath it. Selecting the option will now remove the card from Wallet.
  • If you lose network connectivity during this process, once back in good connectivity, the device will automatically begin the delete process.
  • Alternatively, you can delete the card from your iCloud account.
  • You can then add another card to your device up to the maximum of eight cards.

Apple Watch:

  • To remove the cards from your Apple Watch, navigate to the card in the Wallet for iWatch, tap the card then Press and hold the card to view the options to delete the card. Tap 'Delete' which will remove the card from your Apple Watch.
  • Alternatively you can also delete the card from your Apple Watch using your iPhone by opening the Apple iWatch app. Navigate to the Wallet & Apple Pay then tap the relevant card you wish to delete. Navigate to the bottom of the card and tap 'Remove card.' You can then add another card to your device up to the maximum of eight cards.

What is Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay provides owners of select Galaxy devices the ability to use their Galaxy phone to make payments virtually anywhere you can tap or swipe your card.

What devices can I use with Samsung Pay?

Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6+, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge, Gear S2 Watch. As the number of compatible devices may change, more information can be found at http://www.samsung.com/us/samsung-pay/.

Where can I use Samsung Pay?

You can use Samsung Pay at almost any retailer where you can tap or swipe your card. Samsung Pay utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) as well as Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). MST replicates swiping a physical card at almost any terminal by sending information directly to the magnetic stripe card reader without touching it.

How do I use my Samsung device to make a Samsung Pay transaction?

Simply unlock your Samsung Galaxy device with your fingerprint reader or PIN you selected during setup. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to activate Samsung Pay and hold your phone to the terminal.

How do I get a refund for something I purchased with Samsung Pay?

Making a return for a purchase made with Samsung Pay is very similar to a typical return. You may be asked to place your device near the payment terminal's card or NFC reader to complete the refund, the same way you would be asked to swipe your card during a return with a physical card. You may also need to provide to the cashier the last four digits of your Digital Card Number, which can be found by opening the Samsung Pay app and selecting the card used. The Digital Card Number is just below the last four digits shown on the card.

Do I still get rewards when I use Samsung Pay?

How do I add my card on my Galaxy phone?

No. The card number is encrypted and passed to the MasterCard's tokenization server. After processing, a token is assigned to your device, and this token is used in place of the card number. This token information is stored on the Samsung Pay server and a copy is stored on your device. Your card number is not kept on the Samsung Pay server.
