As an international bank, we understand what it’s like to move to a new country and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Life in a new country offers both opportunities and challenges.  Having your finances set up properly is important as you relocate.

What you need to know about setting up your finances in the U.S.

Building a U.S. credit score

A strong credit history could help improve many aspects of your life in the U.S.  This is especially important as you seek housing, employment and healthcare services in the U.S.

Credit report

A credit report is a detailed report of someone’s credit history, covering information gathered from banks and other creditors about your payment history.  This could include details about monthly credit card and loan payment information, as well as the timeliness of rent and utility payments (including cell phone bills).

Credit score

This is a number between 150-850 (the latter being a perfect score) that represents your credit worthiness.  It’s provided by a credit agency, most of which use one of the two scoring systems – FICO or VantageScore.

Did you know you can apply for a U.S. Social Security Number within two weeks of arrival?

Getting a Social Security Number (SSN) is important as you start establishing financial commitments here in the U.S.

You can apply for one by visiting a Social Security office in the U.S. with the appropriate paperwork to show your legal immigration status and approved authorization to work here.

HSBC can help set up your banking and plan your financial needs before and after your arrival in the U.S.
