Zelle® is a convenient way to send and receive money with friends, family and others you trust using the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app[@appinfo]. All you need is your recipient's email address or U.S. mobile number, and the money will be available to use in minutes[@zelle-accounts] if they're already enrolled with Zelle®. Your account information and activity stay private. Zelle® is available in over 2,200 bank and credit union apps, so you can send money to friends and family even if they don't bank at HSBC. 

No, Zelle® is not available in online banking and is only available on the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app.

To use Zelle®, you'll need an eligible HSBC checking or savings account, a U.S. mobile phone number and U.S. mailing address. You'll also need the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app.

Yes, but an email address or mobile number can only be registered with one bank at a time.

If your details are registered elsewhere, you can use a different U.S. mobile number or email address to enroll with Zelle® at HSBC.

You could also move your email address or number to HSBC by adding your details in the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app. Simply follow the 'receive money' instructions.

If you were expecting to receive an authorization code via email, make sure you entered your email address correctly, check your junk or spam folder and make sure you’re not blocking emails from HSBC@zelle.us.hsbc.com.

If you were expecting to receive an authorization code via text and didn’t, make sure you used a U.S. mobile number, you entered it correctly, and check with your mobile carrier that the short code 739-81 is enabled. Voice over IP (VOIP), landlines and Google voice numbers are not eligible for Zelle enrollment.

Please note that we will never call you to provide you with (or ask you for) an authorization code by phone. If you received a phone call telling you you’ve received a code, it is very likely a scammer trying to obtain access to your account. You can send, request, or receive money with Zelle®. To get started, log on to the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app. Select 'Move Money', then select 'Zelle®'.

Sending money

To send money using Zelle®, simply select someone from your mobile device’s contacts (or add a trusted recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile number), add the amount you’d like to send and an optional note, review, then hit 'Send'. The recipient will receive an email or text message notification via the method they used to enroll with Zelle®. The money will be available to your recipient in minutes if they're already enrolled with Zelle®.

Requesting money

To request money using Zelle®, choose 'Request', select the person from whom you’d like to request money, enter the amount, include an optional note, review and hit 'Request'. If the person you're requesting money from is not yet enrolled with Zelle®, you'll need to use their email address to request money. If they've enrolled their U.S. mobile number, you can use this for the request.

Receiving money

To receive money, just share your enrolled email address, U.S. mobile number or Zelle® QR code with a friend and ask them to send you money with Zelle®. If you've already enrolled with Zelle®, you don't need to do anything else. The money will be sent directly into your HSBC account, typically within minutes.

If someone has sent you money with Zelle® and you've not yet enrolled, follow these steps:

Zelle® is a great way to send money to family, friends, and people you are familiar with such as your personal trainer, babysitter or neighbor[@zelle-accounts].

Since money is sent directly from your HSBC account to another person’s bank account within minutes[@zelle-accounts], Zelle® should only be used to send money to friends, family and others you trust.

If you don’t know the person or are unsure you will get what you paid for (for example, items bought from an online bidding or sales site), you should not use Zelle®. These transactions are potentially high risk (just like sending cash to a person you don’t know is high risk).

In order to use Zelle®, the sender and recipient’s bank or credit union accounts must be based in the U.S.

Once you send or request money to or from someone new, they’ll be added to your recipient list so you can easily send or receive in the future.

To add a new recipient, log on to the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app, go to 'Manage Recipients' under 'Zelle' and select 'Add from contacts'. Alternatively, you can enter the recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile phone number in the search bar (once you do, you’ll automatically be taken to the next step).

Only add someone as a recipient if you know and trust them.

No, we don't charge any fees to use Zelle® in the HSBC U.S. Mobile Banking app. 

For your security, we restrict the number of transactions, and the dollar amount you can send to recipients in any 24-hour, and 30-day period.

At HSBC, there are no limits to the amount of money you can receive with Zelle®. However, remember that the person sending you money will most likely have limits set by their own financial institution on the amount of money they can send you.

As of March 31, 2025, all users must be enrolled through one of over 2,200 banks and credit unions that offer Zelle® in order to send and receive money. The list of participating financial institutions is always growing - you can find the latest list at Zellepay.com. If their bank or credit union is not listed, we recommend you use another payment method. 

If your recipient is enrolled with Zelle®, money is typically available within minutes.

If your recipient isn’t enrolled, they will need to enroll to receive their money. Once they enroll, money is typically available in their account in minutes.

Please note that once you initiate your payment, money will be deducted from your available balance and placed on hold until the recipient enrolls. If your recipient does not enroll within 14 business days of when the money is sent, the money is released back to your account, and the transaction is cancelled.

If you’re enrolled with Zelle®: In addition to receiving an email or text from HSBC alerting you that you’ve received money, you can view incoming and outgoing Zelle® payments in your Zelle® Activity.

If you're not enrolled with Zelle®: You’ll receive an email or text from Zelle® with instructions on how to enroll to receive your money.

Zelle® QR code provides peace of mind, knowing you can send money to the right person, without having to type in their details.

When sending money to someone new, it's important to confirm the recipient is correct by reviewing the displayed name before sending money.

Some small businesses can receive payments with Zelle®. If they do, you can pay them directly from the HSBC Mobile Banking app using just their email address or U.S. mobile number.

Zelle® is a person-to-person payment service that lets you send and receive money from anyone with a U.S. bank account, using an email address or mobile number.

HSBC Bill Pay is for one-time and scheduled payments for your recurring monthly bills (for example, your rent or mortgage, utilities, credit card bills and car payments).

No, Zelle® payments cannot be reversed or cancelled.

You can only cancel a payment if the person you sent money to hasn’t yet enrolled with Zelle®. To check whether the payment is still pending because the recipient hasn’t yet enrolled, you can go to your activity page, choose the payment you want to cancel, and then select 'Cancel This Payment.' If the person you sent money to has already enrolled with Zelle®, the money is sent directly to their bank account and cannot be canceled. This is why it’s important to only send money to people you know and trust, and to ensure you’ve used the correct email address or U.S. mobile number when sending money.

First, check the status of your payment. You can see incoming and outgoing Zelle® payments (both pending and completed) on the Zelle® Activity page.

If the payment status is 'Pending', make sure the recipient enrolls with Zelle® using the email address or U.S. mobile number to which you sent the money. Once they enroll, the money will move directly to their account.

If the payment status is 'Paid', make sure the mobile number or email address you used for your recipient is the same as the one they used to enroll with Zelle®.

In some cases, payments may also be delayed for your protection - for example, if Zelle® or HSBC suspect that fraudulent activity is taking place. If you still have questions, please contact us.

If you send money to a U.S. mobile number or email address that differs from the contact information of your intended recipient, check the 'Pending' section of your Zelle® activity. If the status of your payment is 'Pending', you can cancel it. If the payment is displayed in 'History', please Chat with us for assistance.

Keeping your money and information secure is a top priority for HSBC. When you use Zelle® within our app, your information is protected with the same technology we use to keep your HSBC account safe.

Neither HSBC nor Zelle® offers purchase protection for payments made with Zelle® – for example, if you do not receive the item you paid for, or the item is not as described. Only send money to people and small businesses you trust, and always ensure you’ve used the correct email address or U.S. mobile number when sending money.
