Mobile Payments FAQ

A mobile wallet is either a built-in feature or an app that can be installed onto smartphones.  A mobile wallet stores credit card, debit card, coupon, or reward card information and can connect directly to bank accounts.

Yes, you can use multiple HSBC Credit or Debit Cards with your Mobile Wallet . There is no limit on the number of cards that can be stored in the wallet app. Devices do not share cards, so if you want the same con two different devices, you will need to load the card on each device separately. You can add the same card on up to 10 eligible  devices. Any additional Authorized Users on your account will need to add their card to  their own device if they wish to use the service.

You can use your Mobile Wallet with your compatible  device at over a million stores and restaurants whose payment terminals are set up to accept contactless payments. You can also use it online and in apps.

Simply look for the contactless symbol and unlock your smart device and tap and hold the device a few inches from the payment reader. 

If you need to make a return for a purchase made with your Mobile Wallet you can receive refunds to your account. The key difference is that you may be asked to provide to the cashier the last four digits of your Virtual Account Number instead of the last few digits of your HSBC Card number. The last four digits of your Virtual Account Number for your card can be found by selecting your card in the  Mobile Wallet app and viewing the card details.

Yes, you receive all of the same Rewards, security and benefits of your HSBC Mastercard® Credit Card when you use it with the Mobile Wallet of your choice.

During activation, you may be required to complete additional verification steps while your card details are confirmed. If you need to provide additional verification, you will be presented options on how to complete.

You can select text message (SMS), email, or you can call HSBC at the number provided to complete your enrollment. Depending on the information we have on record for your account, you may not be presented with all options.

Select "Next" to continue. If you select email or SMS, you will be sent a one-time temporary verification code to the mobile number or email address displayed. Once you receive your code by the method you selected (this may take a few minutes), enter it in the appropriate field within the Mobile Wallet app as soon as possible to complete your enrollment.

If your information is verified, you should receive a notification that your card is ready for Mobile Wallet use.

The default card is the one that will be automatically charged for each transaction. The first card you add to your Mobile Wallet device becomes your default payment card unless you change it. Make sure to set your HSBC Mastercard® Credit Card and/or Debit Card as your default card.

No. HSBC does not charge a fee for customers to use any Mobile Wallet.

Yes, if the merchant allows for cash back. If you are using an HSBC Debit Card, the merchant payment terminal will ask you if the card is "Debit" or "Credit". If you select the Debit option, you will be prompted to enter your card PIN. The debit option will allow cash back if the merchant offers it.

The safety and security of your account information is of the highest importance. When you make payments with a Mobile App and your HSBC Debit or Credit Card:

• Your full card number is not shown to the merchant or to the Mobile Wallet provider.
• All transactions are monitored by HSBC's risk and fraud detection systems.
• Purchases made using a Mobile App are protected by Zero Liability, so you won't be held responsible if unauthorized transactions are reported promptly.

Please call HSBC right away at 800.462.1874 and mention that you are a Mobile Wallet  customer. We will close your Credit or Debit Card so that no more purchases can be made. You should also remove the lost or stolen card from the Mobile Wallet App using the "Remove Card" option. When you receive your new card, you will need to add the new card to your Mobile Wallet device before making any purchases.

In addition to notifying your mobile carrier, please call 800.462.1874 promptly and mention that you are a Mobile Wallet customer so that we can disable your card for use within the Wallet App . If you locate your device, you will need to add your new card number to your Mobile Wallet device before making any  purchases.

Since  your Mobile Wallet doesn't store your card details on your device, anyone who finds or steals your device won't be able to access that information, even if it's unlocked.

Yes. If you receive a new Credit or Debit Card with a new expiration date and/or security code (3-digit code on back of card), you will need to update your card information in your Mobile Wallet app. Please remove your old card and add your new card.

No. The card number is encrypted and passed to Mastercard®'s tokenization server. After processing, a token is assigned to your device, and this token is used in place of the card number. This token information is stored on the Mobile Wallet providers server and a copy is stored on your device. Your Credit or Debit Card number is not kept on the server.
